Middle and High School

Secondary School

Our Secondary School encompasses Middle School – MS, from Year 6 to Year 8, and High School – HS, from Year 9 to Year 12.

Middle School Program (Years 6 through 8)
The Middle School provides our students with an education which is sensitive to the needs of teenagers in their social, emotional, and intellectual development. At this level, the faculty works together with our Counselors, Principal, and Vice Principal, and parents, to help our children to achieve better studying habits, organizational skills, and greater responsibility for their learning and behavior. The goal of Middle School is to cultivate confident young learners, who are well-informed and prepared to take on the academic responsibilities of the High School program, in preparation for further education at universities both in Brazil and abroad.

High School Programs (Years 9 through 12)
After completing their education at the Pan American School of Bahia, our children can obtain three diplomas: the American Diploma, the Brazilian Diploma, and the International Baccalaureate (IB DP). From Years 9 to 10, our students take the subjects Portuguese, English, Mathematics, Sciences, and Social Studies, as well as other options which fulfill individual interests. Throughout the four years of High School, students and their families receive guidance in their choice of university from the Counselor and/or the Brazilian Program Director.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP)

Secondary School

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a university preparatory program for our students in Years 11 and 12. Broad and rigorous, it was created in the late 1960s, and since then, it has been considered to be the most prestigious university preparatory program in the world. All students in Years 11 and 12 at our school follow the IB DP, even if they choose not to take the exam to obtain the IB Diploma. The program focuses on six areas of knowledge: the student’s native language, a second language, Social Studies, Experimental Sciences, Mathematics, and Arts. Additional components include Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS).

The IB Program balances the opportunity of academic specialization with the ideals of an eclectic and broad education. The program is also flexible enough to reflect our children’s individual needs and interests. Emphasizing simultaneous learning guarantees interdisciplinary connections that enrich the educational experience. In addition, the community service and extracurricular activities required by CAS help to integrate the emotional and intellectual development of each student while also increasing their global awareness.
