Creativity and innovation in education: exploring the potential of Makerspace and Design & Innovation classes
By Peter Wiggins and Guta Moura, Makerspace and Design & Innovation teachers at PASB
In today’s complex and changing world, it is essential that education integrates Arts, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEAM) knowledge from the early stages of children’s learning journeys. This encompasses not only technical concepts but also the development of competencies such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, which are increasingly essential to meet the challenges of today’s world and future career opportunities. In this context, classes such as Makerspace and Design & Innovation provide hands-on projects that allow students to apply skills and concepts learned in theoretical classes to explore new ideas and solutions to real problems.
The Pan American School of Bahia (PASB), a non-profit parent association, is the only international school in Salvador, accredited by international organizations and with over 60 years of tradition. In Makerspace and Design & Innovation classes, PASB students are introduced to cutting-edge technologies such as 3D printers, robotics, programming, electronics, circuit design and fabrication, and other prototyping tools. In these components, students are encouraged to collaborate on challenging and exciting projects, share ideas, and support each other in developing solutions.
PASB’s Design & Innovation and Makerspace classes offer a hands-on learning environment essential for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students are challenged to tackle complex problems that require creativity to create innovative solutions. In the labs, students learn to deal with mistakes and to understand them not as barriers but as stepping stones to success.
Design & Innovation and Makerspace classes promote creativity and innovation in education by allowing students to experiment and test their ideas in a safe and fun learning environment. Technology and manufacturing skills are crucial for innovation. After overcoming all the challenges at various stages of development, students can lead a trajectory of achievement, experiencing the prestige of contributing to society through communication, leadership, entrepreneurship, and perseverance.
PASB is committed to providing its students with a high-quality, well-rounded education, and the Design & Innovation and Makerspace classes are a key part of that commitment. With the support of expert faculty and access to cutting-edge technologies, PASB students have the opportunity to take a journey of achievement and excel in an ever-changing world by exploring communication skills, leadership, entrepreneurship, and perseverance.
